I would have to say the secret to life is contentment. This world tells you that you need to strive to be more, to have more, to make more. I don’t know about anyone else, but that leaves me exhausted and empty. Anytime that I find myself trying to “keep up with the Jones'”, I find myself falling short … very short.
Contentment is definitely something I strive towards because it is not a thing, but a feeling. I have achieved contentment many times in my life and love the feeling because it is so peaceful. Unfortunately, it can be as fleeting as the wind.
When I simply ignore the world and just follow my heart, I am not only very content, but I am also very happy. Colossians 3:2 says to “set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, …”. That is my reminder to keep my eyes on God and His plans for my life and not worry about anything else.
One area in which I am learning to be content with is my body. As I mentioned before, the world says women should look a certain way and be physically fit. Well, I am not a size 0 and I do not have defined muscles. I am, however, strong enough and fit enough to do most of the things I want to do. I do recognize that I want to work towards getting more fit so I can do more advanced hiking with the family. I am a size 14/16 (depending on the brand I wear) and I am curvy. It’s how God made me.
No matter what, I am learning to be content in my life. It’s a hard lesson to learn, but well worth it.
Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. (Philippians 4:11)
